When we were kids, we lived near a golf course. It was fun to go collect balls that were outside the course fence. We'd bring home our find and cut them open. Peeling off the outside coating, we would usually find a ball that was all wound in a thin rubber elastic band. We'd cut one of the bands and set the ball on the floor and watch it bounce all over while it unwound. After all the rubber banding was gone we would be left with either a small rubber ball that was like the old "super balls" that had a terrific bounce, or there would be a rubber ball with a white-paste goop inside. My friend Wayne (Ione's husband) is an expert wood carver and has recently started carving the rubber ball that is inside a golf ball. He said he doesn't run into any that are wrapped in elastic bands anymore and if he finds one with the goopy middle he throws it away. These days, when you take the cover off a golf ball there is just a nice rubber ball inside that can come in any one of many different colors. So I think part of the fun of this hobby is just opening up the cover to see what color you get! He carves them, then sprays them with a coating that has a bit of glitter in it.
Below is a carved golf ball that Wayne gave me, I had my choice of many colors and I chose this beautiful light blue one. It sits on our dining room table.
Thanks Wayne!
And to everyone, thanks for reading!
